St Wilfrid’s Bell Restoration Project
Safeguarding the Sound of Our Heritage
For nearly three centuries, the bells of St Wilfrid’s have called people to prayer, rung out in celebration at weddings, tolled in times of mourning, and marked moments of national and local importance. They are a living part of Northenden’s history — the heartbeat of our community.
After many years of faithful service, the bells now require significant restoration to ensure they can continue ringing for generations to come. We are launching an ambitious project to restore and rehang the bells, preserving this treasured part of our church’s heritage.
Why This Work is Needed
The bells currently hang in a historic oak bell frame within our medieval tower. This frame is formally recognised as being of historic significance and is protected similarly to a listed building. While it has served the church well, time has taken its toll:
- The oak frame shows signs of age and decay.
- Bearings and other essential fittings are worn.
- The wooden headstocks have softened.
- Years of limited maintenance have made the bells increasingly difficult to ring.
A particular concern is the U‑shaped steel staples cast into the crowns of the bells. Common in the period when our bells were cast, these staples corrode internally. As they expand, they risk cracking or even destroying the bell — an irreversible loss of irreplaceable historic instruments.
Below are recent photographs from within the bell chamber, showing the current condition of the bells and fittings:
What the Restoration Involves
Working closely with specialist bell‑hanging professionals, the restoration project will include:
- Removing the bells from the tower for safe transport to a dedicated bell‑hanging workshop.
- Manufacturing new steel headstocks and modern, long‑lasting fittings.
- Installing a new steel beam to provide structural support beneath the historic frame.
- Restoring the original oak frame using specialist conservation methods.
- Introducing sound control measures to help manage sound levels during ringing.
- Improving lighting and heating in the ringing room.
- Rehanging the restored bells and fittings back into the tower.
The total cost of this historic project is estimated at approximately £150,000. This figure reflects the scale and specialist nature of the work required to protect our historic bells for the future.
